Hello Everyone!
I am so excited to begin the journey of being a peer mentor and building friendships with the fellow mentors. I am anxious to be able to be more involved in the Hixson Program and be able to give back to the program because it has been very beneficial to me as a student and I am sure to the rest of you as well :)
The first chapter of the peer mentor book covered the topics of tutoring, mentoring and the differences between the two. There were also many other topics that were covered in the Chapter. Knowing your role of being a peer mentor is very important and I feel that this semester is going to be very beneficial in U ST 311 learning the different tasks that are needed to be a successful peer mentor and how to help the incoming freshman Hixson students. Peer mentors have a great effect on a students transitions into college. I am very excited to take on the role as a Peer Mentor, the book as so many good tips and ideas for one to become a good peer mentor. I am a very shy person and I think that this class is going to be very beneficial for me to start opening up to new people.
Last week in class we played two truths and a lie, at first I thought to myself this game is going to be so hard because I only know one other fellow peer mentor. But it turned out it was very fun and interesting to learn things about each of the other peer mentors and it was also a good game to note down to play as an ice breaker with our students next semester in our recitation classes we will be leading. I am excited for this semester to get to know ALL of you and build some great friendships with you!
See you guys in class!! :)
Two truths and a lie is one of my top 5 ice breakers :) It gets a lot harder to play when you know the people a little better because you have to try and come up with things that no one else knows already. However, it makes it that much more interesting and fun to do!

ReplyDeleteThis class is SO beneficial to prepare for the task of peer mentoring in the fall, even for old geezers like me and Anthony who have done it before ;) I'm sure over the course of the semester you will get more comfortable with us and yourself and will blossom into a wonderful public speaker and peer mentor. See you Tuesday!
I didnt know you were shy! Dont worry, around everyone you will loosen up and grow out of your shell and become a SUPER GREAT mentor im sure of it
ReplyDeleteI totally understand where you are coming from with wanting to give back to the Hixson program! I love the icebreaker two truths and a lie and it was interesting to find out little facts about everybody.
ReplyDeleteAfter a while you will come to be not as shy! It's no big deal!! Good post Jenna!!
